2016 United States ARDF Championships
All participants will be responsible for their own lodging and transportation
to the event. There are many hotels and motels available in Killeen,
Belton, Temple, Georgetown, and even further along the I-35 transit corridor.
We suggest staying in Killeen or Harker Heights, which is close to both
restaurants and stores, and only about 20 minutes away from the competition
sites (and 45 minutes from Georgetown if you do the practice day). There
are, of course, many more hotels available in the Austin area, but expect
significantly longer travel times to/from the competition areas.
There are cabins and campsites reservable directly through the
Equestrian Center, but the water there is not safe to drink, the
bathrooms are in a separate building, and competitors will not be able
to wander beyond the campground area due to the competition area embargo.
If you still prefer to camp on the ranch, let Ona know you're with the
ARDF group if you reserve a site there.
A few cabins are available at the
Parrie Haynes C5 Youth Camp,
and Jen Harker W5JEN is in charge of reserving those. The embargoed area
at the youth camp is even more restrictive because the Sprint competition
area will be close by. The cabins at the youth camp have a refrigerator,
microwave, and coffeepot.
You can also camp at Union Grove Park on Stillhouse Hollow Lake, which is managed by
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Reservations can be made through
www.recreation.gov or calling
+1-877-444-6777. Dana Peak Park on Stillhouse Hollow Lake also has camp
sites, but competitors should not stay there prior to Thursday night
due to the competition area embrago.
While there is public bus service
in the Killeen area, there is no public transportation available to the
competition areas, so you will want a car to get around or plan to carpool
with other competitors.
The major grocery store chain in central Texas is
H-E-B and there are four stores in the
Killeen/Harker Heights area. The H-E-B Plus! store on Trimmier Road just
south of the intersection with Central Texas Expressway (US 190) will be
largest, and includes a pharmacy, gas station, and a variety of general
merchandise. In Texas, beer and wine can be purchased in grocery stores any
day of the week. Hard liquor (over 17% ABV) is only sold in liquor stores
(which can also sell beer and wine) but stores that sell hard liquor cannot
be open on Sundays. The largest liquor store in the area (if you want to
take home a souvenir or two of local Texas products) is
You can get beer, wine, and mixed drinks in restaurants and bars any time
except Sunday before noon.
Some notable retail stores in Killeen/Harker Heights that feature sports
and outdoors equipment include:
